Multi-step Problems

✏️ Paper first! Work out every question on paper before you tap Show solution. Write down every step – the equation, the numbers with units, the rearranging and the answer with its unit. In the exam, if your final answer is wrong you can still get marks for correct working, but only if the examiner can see it.

Exam questions often make you use two or three equations in a row – the answer to one step becomes the starting point for the next. These pages practise exactly that.

How to tackle a multi-step problem

  1. Work backwards: what does the question want? Which equation gives it? What do you need for that equation that you haven’t been given?
  2. Find the missing quantity first using another equation from the sheet.
  3. Use FIFA for every step and label each step.
  4. Don’t round until the end – carry the full calculator value between steps.

Choose a set

All three sets use Combined Science equations, so they suit both Combined and Separate students. Every equation is on the equation sheet in the exam.
