The Edexcel International set is now complete. Physics came first, then Chemistry, and Biology (4BI1) is out today.
Same idea as the AQA packs. Revising from a specification is hard, because it tells you what to know but never asks you anything. So every learning point in the specification has been rewritten as a question, with the answer directly underneath, in the specification’s own order. Cover the answer, have a go, check.
What’s in it
- 5 booklets covering sections 1 to 5, from the characteristics of living organisms through to cloning
- 286 questions and answers, following the specification point by point
- 40 worked examples set out step by step
- Every practical in the specification, with a checklist
- 27 exam tips, and 15 six-mark questions with full mark schemes
- 55 pages, A4, print-ready
The calculations are the hard part
Biology students are often fine on the content and then lose marks the moment a number appears. So the worked examples cover exactly those: magnification in both directions, percentage change in mass for the osmosis practical, rate calculations, genetic crosses including a test cross and codominance, the chance of two independent events, capture–recapture, energy transfer efficiency, scaling up from a quadrat, and feed conversion on a fish farm.
Each one is broken into numbered steps, so a student can see where their own working went wrong rather than just that it did.
Double Award students can skip the right things
Bold ‘B’ statements are tagged [Paper 2 only] throughout. Biology students know which content appears only on Paper 2; Science (Double Award) students know exactly what they can leave out — stem cells, gas exchange in plants, vaccination and clotting, transpiration, the entire kidney and nephron section, FSH and LH, DNA structure and protein synthesis, codominance, the nitrogen cycle, deforestation, fish farming and cloning.
That is a lot of content a Double Award student does not need, and finding it out in April is too late.
