11+ and KS2 SATs Maths: Ramped Questions with Worked Answers

โœ๏ธ Paper first! Work out every question on paper before you open the answer. Write down every step โ€“ the equation, the numbers with units, the rearranging and the answer with its unit. In the exam, if your final answer is wrong you can still get marks for correct working, but only if the examiner can see it.

For: Year 5 and Year 6  |  Exams: KS2 SATs, grammar-school 11+ (GL and CEM style) and independent-school 11+  |  Calculator: not allowed

11+ maths is KS2 maths pushed harder. These pages use one ramp for both exams: each topic starts with SATs-style arithmetic and climbs to the hardest selective 11+ questions. Every level has a worked example, a common mistake to avoid and 10 practice questions with answers.

๐Ÿ“ถ HOW THE LEVELS WORK

Level 1 โ€“ SATs core: the arithmetic in SATs Paper 1.
Level 2 โ€“ SATs stretch: the harder reasoning questions in SATs Papers 2 and 3.
Level 3 โ€“ 11+ standard: multi-step word problems, typical of grammar-school papers.
Level 4 โ€“ 11+ selective: working backwards and unfamiliar problems, typical of independent-school papers.

For SATs, aim to be secure at Levels 1 and 2. For the 11+, work up to Level 3 or 4 depending on the school.

  • Check each answer by opening it, then move up a level once you get 8 out of 10 right.
