The Physics Question Bank

GCSE Focus Questions: Every Specification Point as a Question

โœ๏ธ Paper first! Work out every question on paper before you open the answer. Write down every step โ€“ the equation, the numbers with units, the rearranging and the answer with its unit. In the exam, if your final answer is wrong you can still get marks for correct working, but only if the examiner can see it.

GCSE Focus Questions: every point of the specification as a question

The exam board’s specification is the list of everything you can be asked. Focus Questions turn every single point on that list into a short question, with the answer underneath. Cover the answer, have a go, check, and tick it off. When you can answer every question, you know the whole course.

Why they work

  • Nothing is missed. The questions follow the specification point by point, so there are no gaps.
  • Testing beats re-reading. Answering questions from memory is one of the best ways to make facts stick.
  • You see exactly what to revise. The questions you get wrong are your revision list.
  • Required practicals included. Every required practical in the course is covered.

1. Energy: Write the equation linking kinetic energy, mass and speed.

Kinetic energy = ยฝ ร— mass ร— speedยฒ, or Ek = ยฝmvยฒ. Energy in joules (J), mass in kilograms (kg), speed in metres per second (m/s).

2. Energy: What is meant by the specific heat capacity of a substance?

The amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of 1 kg of the substance by 1 ยฐC.

3. Electricity: What are the frequency and potential difference of the UK mains supply?

Frequency 50 Hz, potential difference about 230 V. It is an alternating current (ac) supply.

4. Electricity: How does the resistance of a thermistor change as its temperature increases?

The resistance decreases as the temperature increases.

5. Particle model: What is meant by the specific latent heat of a substance?

The amount of energy needed to change the state of 1 kg of the substance with no change in temperature.

6. Atomic structure: What does an alpha particle consist of?

Two protons and two neutrons. It is the same as a helium nucleus.

7. Atomic structure: Define the half-life of a radioactive isotope.

The time it takes for the number of unstable nuclei in a sample to halve, or the time it takes for the count rate (activity) of a sample to fall to half its starting level.

8. Forces: Write the equation for Newton’s second law.

Resultant force = mass ร— acceleration, or F = ma. Force in newtons (N), mass in kg, acceleration in m/sยฒ.

9. Waves: List the electromagnetic waves in order, from longest to shortest wavelength.

Radio waves, microwaves, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, X-rays, gamma rays.

10. Magnetism: Give two ways to increase the force on a current-carrying wire in a magnetic field.

Increase the current, or use a stronger magnet (increase the magnetic flux density). The force is greatest when the wire is at right angles to the field.
