The Physics Question Bank

Grid References

โœ๏ธ Paper first! Work out every question on paper before you open the answer. Write down every step โ€“ the equation, the numbers with units, the rearranging and the answer with its unit. In the exam, if your final answer is wrong you can still get marks for correct working, but only if the examiner can see it.

Practise 4-figure and 6-figure grid references on a new map extract every time. Wrong answers get a specific hint, and the worked solution zooms into the square.

Worked solution

A 4-figure grid reference gives the square. Read the easting (along the bottom) first, then the northing (up the side), using the lines that meet at the bottom-left corner of the square. Along the corridor, then up the stairs.

A 6-figure reference adds tenths: split the square into ten each way. Answers within one tenth on each axis are marked correct, because tenths are estimated by eye. This map is a simple practice extract with made-up symbols, not a real map.
