๐ KEY DEFINITIONS โ learn them word for word
Efficiency is the proportion of the total input energy that is usefully transferred. It has no unit and can never be more than 1 (100%).
Dissipated (wasted) energy is energy transferred to the surroundings in a way that is not useful โ usually by heating the surroundings.
The equation
efficiency = useful output energy transfer รท total input energy transfer
| Quantity | Unit |
|---|---|
| efficiency | no unit (a decimal, or ร 100 for %) |
| useful output energy | joules (J) |
| total input energy | joules (J) |
Rearranged: useful output = efficiency ร total input | total input = useful output รท efficiency | wasted = input โ useful
Use FIFA for every answer
- F โ Formula: write the equation as it appears on the sheet.
- I โ Insert: put in the numbers (use the same units top and bottom; turn % into a decimal).
- F โ Fix: rearrange to make the unknown the subject.
- A โ Answer: calculate and give the unit (efficiency has none).
Foundation: aim for Q1โ8. Higher: aim for Q4โ10. Most questions need rearranging.
