Teach the Topic: Waves

✏️ Paper first! Work out every question on paper before you tap Show solution. Write down every step – the equation, the numbers with units, the rearranging and the answer with its unit. In the exam, if your final answer is wrong you can still get marks for correct working, but only if the examiner can see it.

✏️ Topic summary – copy into your book

Waves transfer energy without transferring matter. They can be transverse or longitudinal, and are described by their amplitude, wavelength, frequency and speed (v = fλ). Waves can be reflected, refracted, transmitted or absorbed at a boundary. Electromagnetic waves form a continuous spectrum from radio waves to gamma rays; they all travel at the same speed in a vacuum and have different uses and dangers. All objects emit and absorb infrared radiation. (S only) Lenses form images, sound and ultrasound are longitudinal waves with many uses, and seismic waves give evidence for the structure of the Earth.
