Energy Transfer in Food Chains

โœ๏ธ Paper first! Work out every question on paper before you open the answer. Write down every step โ€“ the equation, the numbers with units, the rearranging and the answer with its unit. In the exam, if your final answer is wrong you can still get marks for correct working, but only if the examiner can see it.

Practise calculating the efficiency of biomass and energy transfer between trophic levels. Read values from pyramids of biomass, find what is lost, and work across several levels. New numbers every time, with a worked solution for each step.

The rules
  1. Efficiency of transfer = biomass at the higher level รท biomass at the lower level ร— 100. The same works for energy.
  2. Higher level on top. The answer is always less than 100%, because each level has less biomass than the one below it.
  3. Biomass lost = biomass at the lower level โˆ’ biomass at the higher level.
  4. Percentage lost = 100 โˆ’ efficiency.
  5. Biomass at the next level = biomass at the lower level ร— efficiency รท 100.
  6. Use the right pair of levels. Primary consumers eat producers, secondary consumers eat primary consumers. Across two transfers, multiply the efficiencies as decimals.

Worked solution

Only about 10% of biomass is usually passed on to the next trophic level, but it varies a lot between food chains. That is why food chains rarely have more than four or five levels.

Answers within 1% are marked correct, so rounding to 3 significant figures is fine.
