Geography Statistics

✏️ Paper first! Work out every question on paper before you open the answer. Write down every step – the equation, the numbers with units, the rearranging and the answer with its unit. In the exam, if your final answer is wrong you can still get marks for correct working, but only if the examiner can see it.

Find the mean, median, mode, range and interquartile range of realistic fieldwork data. A new data set every time, with each step shown in the worked solution.

The rules
  1. Mean = total of the values ÷ number of values.
  2. Median = the middle value once the data is in order. Its position is (n + 1) ÷ 2. With an even number of values, take the midpoint of the two middle ones.
  3. Mode = the value that appears most often.
  4. Range = largest − smallest.
  5. Quartiles: with the data in order, the lower quartile is the value in position (n + 1) ÷ 4 and the upper quartile is the value in position 3(n + 1) ÷ 4.
  6. Interquartile range = upper quartile − lower quartile. It shows the spread of the middle half of the data and is not affected by extreme values.
  7. Mean from a frequency table = total of (frequency × value) ÷ total frequency. For grouped data, use the midpoint of each class: the answer is an estimate.

Worked solution

Quartiles use the GCSE (n + 1) ÷ 4 method. Put the data in order. The lower quartile is the value in position (n + 1) ÷ 4 and the upper quartile is the value in position 3(n + 1) ÷ 4. Quartile questions here use 7, 11 or 15 values, so these positions are always whole numbers. This is the same as leaving the median out and finding the middle of each half. If you were taught to include the median in each half, your answer is also accepted.

Means are marked correct to the rounding asked for. Medians, modes, ranges and quartiles must be exact.
