Percentage Yield and Atom Economy

โœ๏ธ Paper first! Work out every question on paper before you open the answer. Write down every step โ€“ the equation, the numbers with units, the rearranging and the answer with its unit. In the exam, if your final answer is wrong you can still get marks for correct working, but only if the examiner can see it.

Work out how much product a reaction really makes, and how much of the reactants end up in the product you want. Every question uses real balanced equations and the rules below.

The rules
  1. Percentage yield = actual mass of product รท theoretical mass ร— 100. Actual on top. The answer can never be more than 100 %.
  2. Theoretical yield comes from the balanced equation. Find moles of reactant (mass รท Mr), use the ratio from the equation, then mass of product = moles ร— Mr. Higher
  3. Yields are less than 100 % because the reaction may be reversible, some product is lost when it is separated, and side reactions can happen.
  4. Atom economy = Mr of desired product รท total Mr of all reactants ร— 100. The bottom line is the reactants, not the products.
  5. Multiply each Mr by its balancing number from the equation, for the reactants and for the desired product. 3CO means 3 ร— 28 = 84.

Worked solution

Percentage yield and atom economy are in the AQA GCSE Chemistry (separate science) course. Working out a theoretical yield from reacting masses is Higher tier.

    Relative atomic masses are the values on the AQA GCSE periodic table, for example H = 1, C = 12, N = 14, O = 16, Na = 23, Mg = 24, Al = 27, S = 32, Cl = 35.5, Ca = 40, Fe = 56, Cu = 63.5. Answers within 1% are marked correct.
